UK Expands Methanol Toxicity Alert List with 11 Nations

The UK government has added eleven further destinations to its travel alert register concerning the dangers of methanol toxicity from tainted spirits.

The updated warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after evidence showing "a global increase in the incidence of reported cases" of industrial alcohol contamination.

Just last month, officials had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, following several serious incidents like the tragic death of six tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being warned that as little as minimal doses of methanol can result in permanent eye damage or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hours.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Utilized?

Methanol is a harmful chemical typically employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint solvent. This substance is not intended for drinking.

Although it is naturally produced during the creation of beverages, commercial firms lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the distillation process.

But in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to cut costs, and because it is tasteless and scentless, it is impossible to identify.

Official Guidance for Travellers

Government minister a senior official said that every traveler should recognize the signs of methanol contamination.

"If you're having drinks in foreign countries, choose trusted places and avoid local brews or free shots," Falconer said.

"If something feels off, such as a headache that's much more severe than normal or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor right away."

The complete list of destinations identified as posing a risk of toxic alcohol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
