Hazbin Hotel's Creator Reveals Rosie and Alastor's Origin Tale Serves as a Huge Season 3 Tease
Dedicated viewers of the series at last received a long-awaited origin story in season 2's episode 4, called “It's a Deal.” This installment will probably spark a lot of discussion and raise many questions about the essence of a certain demonic Overlord who appears significantly stronger than any character before realized. These fresh disclosures feature a look into the mortal existence of a fan-favorite character prior to his demise and condemnation to the underworld.
A Major Tease for Future Seasons
The series creator disclosed a secret about the episode – it serves as a major tease for the third season. She also provided further details into the methodology of creating the human versions of her infernal animated characters.
Spoiler alert for the fourth episode of Hazbin Hotel, the show's second season.
In “It’s a Deal”, a flashback reveals that fan-favorite character Alastor the Radio Demon was a serial killer in his mortal days. Knowing full well he was destined for Hell, he made contact with the afterlife in advance to obtain a strong position there. Rosie, who leads the cannibal faction in Hell, vowed Alastor he would become “the strongest Condemned Soul in Hell” in exchange for his eternal spirit.
This raises the question: In what way is this character sufficiently strong to elevate Alastor over every other Demonic Sinners?
“The agreement between Rosie and Alastor is the first stepping stone in a larger narrative that encompasses so much, moving into season 3,” the showrunner explains. “Obviously that is an excellent question: How is she so strong? The solution could be various factors, but the answer is in season 3. I'm very excited for fans to see it.”
There’s no telling how long the audience will have to wait for Hazbin Hotel’s third season. The production companies have approved seasons 3 and 4, but the showrunner frequently notes that animated production is a time-consuming endeavor, and later seasons are undated. Still, she states withholding on those details is an important part of keeping season 2’s attention in the right places.
“The challenge of any kind of deal with infernal beings, or stories that have enigmas, is giving the audience sufficient clues to be like, Something's up here, and then revealing that as we go, and letting that be satisfying,” she says. “So I am quite eager.”
Mysteries Resolved in The Next Season
The creator assures that season 3 will tackle the queries fans have been posing, such as why Rosie commanded Alastor to vanish for seven years, which weakened his influence in Hell.
“The whole seven years, and the pacts these individuals are making, and everything — it's feeding into a larger story,” she reveals.
Meanwhile, the Rosie/Alastor backstory episode offers another glimpse into how the main characters of Sinner Demons appeared as as mortals, the second after seeing another character's historical human form in episode 2. She says that a lot of thought went into these character designs.
“The human versions of these personas carry great significance,” she notes. “They range from appearing quite distinct from their demon form to seeming very similar. With the first character, the initial design we see, there was a little bit of a debate within the team between choosing something that symbolizes the personality, versus selecting an option that's very time-period accurate. We leaned toward making a design that just seemed like it was him.”
She mentions the primary controversy over Pentious’ human design was his long hair: “We were like, ‘Nobody typically had long hair like that in that historical period.’ But simultaneously, we believe the silhouette is extremely crucial, and we also just thought he looked good. We were like, ‘This just feels right.’ We kind of gave the excuse that he lived in seclusion, so he just allowed his hair to lengthen. So there is always a solution. As we create the human versions of these personas […] it is a very enjoyable process to investigate and determine. I'm excited for fans to see more of what the human forms look like.”
